Whether shipping gifts to family or merchandise to customers, it is essential to choose the right size mailer or box. Choose packaging that is too large, and the contents are more likely to shift. Even if the box is large enough to fit the contents, in most cases, it also needs to accommodate appropriate packing materials.

Fragile items require more space than those that are unlikely to break during shipping. If you are shipping more than one item in the same package, consider using internal boxes to ensure you package each item appropriately. If your shipment includes very heavy items and fragile items, consider sending in separate containers.

Most items also require packing materials to fill any voids. Bubble wrap and packing peanuts provide sturdy padding without adding a lot of weight to the package. Many shipping centers sell recycled packing materials and take clean materials you no longer need.

Sturdy items, such as books, require less packing than more fragile ones. Choose boxes that appropriate for the weight of these heavy items. Even with these sturdy items, select a package that provides a good fit and fill voids with packing materials.

Consider padded mailers instead of boxes when shipping small items. Mailers are lighter in weight and provide protection for the contents. If shipping electronics, consider choosing a mailer with static guard to protect the contents.

The goal of shipping is to transport the contents of the package safely from one location to another. Use of appropriate packaging and packing materials is essential the shipment. No one enjoys receiving a package filled with damaged goods. As a shipper, you are able to protect the items before you hand them over to the provider.
